What Our Members Say

"I have always been passionate about health and fitness.  Working in the industry as a Personal Trainer I was particularly aware of the importance of keeping active and eating well.

When I was pregnant two years ago, I wanted to maintain my level of fitness as much as I could, not only for my own wellbeing and making me feel good about myself, but the benefits of exercising  through pregnancy are well documented for both the unborn child and the Mother.

Prior to my pregnancy,  I had a tiny bit of exposure to CrossFit workouts and like everyone when they try CrossFit – I was hooked!  Naturally I was keen to keep up this enthusiasm and motivation for training, but I knew that having a baby on board I would need to be careful with it.  Enter the CrossFit Mom website – a website dedicated to providing daily workouts for Pregnant and Post Natal Women.

Guided by this website I continued to CrossFit.  In fact, it wasn’t until my actual due date that I decided enough was enough and I put the CrossFit workouts aside.  Nine days later I gave birth to my little girl.

I had a great pregnancy with no complications.  I CrossFitted three to four times a week, just scaling the workouts as I needed based on how I was feeling at the time.  I put on a total of 10kgs and gave birth to a healthy 7lb 13oz baby.

Within three weeks of having my baby I was back training.  I started out gradually, swinging my 8kg Kettlebell and just worked my way up from there.  I adopted a Primal way of eating and found my energy levels were great, despite the sleep deprivation and nightly feeds!   Seven months post partum I was fitter and stronger than I was pre pregnancy, I had my six pack back and I was setting new PR’s in the gym.

I want to have another baby in the future, and when I do, I will not be changing a single thing from the first time round.

CrossFit and Primal/Paleo all the way!"

"Six weeks ago I entered the ‘box’ in Wellington to start training.  I was in town for four weeks.  Over just four weeks the incredible trainers showed me how to use CrossFit and diet to change my body, mind and my life!

Training with the MyCrossFit team, was incredible.  The trainers gave me the support and direction to be able to work as hard as I could through each session.  They helped me bring out my competitiveness.  They taught me how to use correct form to push the body harder.  I learnt about the correct combinations of training and techniques.  The other CrossFitters were such an inspiration and a great support.  To see immense strength and determination coming from people of all shapes and sizes is something that keeps me motivated in my training.

The week I started, the 6 week food challenge began.  I’d never heard of Paleo.  Dairy and carbs were high in my diet - how could I possibly live without them!  I put faith in the trainers.  I ate a lot of meat, veggies, avocados, almonds and no bread, no sugar and limited dairy/grains.  The first week was fine.  The second week was tough as my body withdrew from sugar and carbs.  The third week I can honestly say I started to ‘feel’ very different.  My energy levels increased, my training improved as I had more energy to complete it.   I started to feel an overwhelming feeling of happiness.  And my body started changing!

Muscles began showing, my waist toned up and my legs lost their wobbly bits!  The last two weeks of the challenge has been easy, as the changes in my body have given me the motivation to keep it up.  I strongly believe that the food challenge has taught me a practical and easy food plan that is ideal for my body and life.  With two children under 4 years old, I need to keep up high energy levels.

The change in diet and training has improved everything in life for me.  In total now I've lost 30kg, 4.5 kgs of it over the 6 weeks of the challenge, but the biggest change has been in my physical shape.  People are commenting on the changes, even in my face - the double chin’s gone! YAY!   I have stacks of energy, I’m more patient and that feeling of happiness I mentioned – it’s still here!  I have a new motto that I heard somewhere once: “Nothing tastes as good as this feels”

So thanks to all the MyCrossFit team.  I had a blast and learnt lessons that will stay with me for the rest of my life!"

"I’ve always had a competitive nature and have been active all my life, last year training for half marathon I injured myself and found myself in sedentary slump. Everyone knows how hard it is to jump back on the fitness horse again but I’m glad I jumped on the wildest bronco of them all - CrossFit.

I’ve never had proper training and have always been intimidated by weightlifting. Once taught proper form and finding my own level, I was instantly interested in improving my strength through the skills I learned through the weight lifting series. I am completely amazed (and by amazed, I mean sore) at the diverse muscle groups engaged through simple squats.

The real results kicked in when I participated in the 6 week Paleo Lifestyle Challenge. Eating the proper foods and working out 2-3 times a week was the ultimate break through.

I lost 7kg in 6 weeks. I’ve never felt stronger or looked better. I know the Paleo lifestyle is how I want to continue living my life. Thank you, Mike and all my peers at CrossFit, for your support and encouragement.

This program is for me."

"I am recovering from a prolapsed disc (at L5/S1) that has limited my ability to be active for well over 18 months. I decided to start CrossFit training with Mike Young at the Box about 15 months after my injury.

To my surprise, I found that CrossFit was even more beneficial for my recovery than the yoga, pilates and swimming I had been doing for the previous year. With the personal coaching from the trainers (Mike and Sovita) I was able to safely modify the exercises and get great workouts. I was initially frustrated at my inability to squat properly, but within a few weeks I saw dramatic improvements in my ability to do most crossfit moves and olympic lifts. I always took it a bit easy to avoid re-injuring myself, but after several months going to WODs 1-3 times a week, I found myself feeling more strong and fit than I have since my injury.

Although I have now incorporated a number of the moves into daily mini workouts at home, nothing beats the motivation of doing the WOD with the crew at myCrossFit. There's a great community at the gym, and it's fantastic to find a group of people who are also trying to eat paleo. What sets crossfit apart from other gyms and working out at home is the motivating group dynamic that pushes you that extra bit further.

Highly recommend to anyone who benefits from team training."

"When I went to my first CrossFit class, I didn’t really know what to expect. My colleague had told me about it and I thought “how hard could half an hour of exercise be”? After the first class I was absolutely shattered, and the next day my body was extremely sore. But - no pain, no gain!

The workouts are always interesting, always different. I enjoy the variety of the different circuits and exercises and not knowing what the next WOD will be. I like the fact that the different exercises means you work every part of your body, as opposed to just focusing on a few places.

I have now been going to CrossFit for 3 months and I would have to say that I never felt so toned, fit and strong, even after years at the gym and countless team sports. There are workouts where I wonder to myself “how I am going to get to the end”, but I always manage to finish and often pleasantly surprised with myself.

I find CrossFit to be challenging, both physically and mentally, with great rewards. I would recommend it to everybody.

I’m addicted!"

"MyCrossFit & Mike are awesome. No matter your fitness levels you can adjust the workout to your level. Like me, you might start out not even able to do a burpee and have to do starjumps! But soon you'll find you’re very sore (in a good way!) and you always have people encouraging you and enjoying your progress as much as you do.

But all you really need to know are my results - Since May (to Sept 2010)

* Muslce mass 73.9% to 78.95%
* Lean Mass 95.3kg to 100kg
* Body Fat 33.6kg to 26.6kgs! That's 7kgs of FAT gone and replaced with muscle
* 131kgs to 126.6kg Weight change
* Waist (measured belly button) 124cm to 118.2cm, 6.2cm lost!

Most of these changes occurred in the past six weeks since I tried the Paleo Challenge and really changed my diet and lifestyle.

Thanks Mike, CrossFit and Paleo"

"I heard about CrossFit from a friend and slowly watched his progress and looked at some of the things that he did in his daily workouts.  The more I watched, the more I liked what I saw.  I decided to make some contact to see if there was anything available down in Wellington and was put in touch with Mike.

We managed to organise a training session outside and off we went.  First work out, and managed to rip two lovely blisters on my hands from pull ups BUT I was hooked.  Been training now 2 to 3 times a week and already noticing the difference in recovery and strength.

The work outs are fun and the other guys and gals that come along are all really motivated and we all push each other.

It's a GREAT way to train, meet other like minded people and to top it off, get in shape.  It makes training competitive but also fun and that is the main thing.

Can’t wait for my next WOD!  Bring it on!"

"CrossFit was introduced to me by my water polo coach at the University of California, Santa Cruz, where I played four years of NCAA Division III water polo.  Since graduating from UCSC in 2008, I've become much more passionate about CrossFit, and in particular, the community at CrossFit Santa Cruz.  I have been an athlete all of my life, but CrossFit’s strength and conditioning program has put me in my fittest shape.

I am currently living in Wellington and playing water polo for the Harbour City Hawks, as well as continuing my CrossFit training.  The CrossFit community is beginning to grow in New Zealand and I'm happy to have found MyCrossFit.  The gym has a great central location in town, with an awesome group of people! Mike’s daily warm-ups and workouts are creative and intense.  No pain, No gain!

I enjoy being able to improve and learn something new everyday at the gym.  My understanding of functional movement and intensity continues to grow.  My favorite part about CrossFit is that it is truly for all ages, all types of people, and something that will continue to improve my life.

Scared… and ready for the next WOD!"

 "I want to be faster, stronger and more powerful. For me, CrossFit is a great vehicle for me to get there with. Workouts that are dynamic, condensed and as brutal and intense as you can find the stomach to make them. Holistic functional training with a community structure to encourage you to push yourself that much harder.

My body is screaming today, love it."

"I am very grateful that mike has introduced my friends and I to CrossFit. I'm well convinced that CrossFit is the future of fitness for any person trying to reach there true potential.

For the past year I have been doing weights, mainly isolated movements as I have a bad knee and tend to stay away from to many leg workouts. While only doing CrossFit for about 4-5 weeks, I've already noticed my knee is feeling much stronger and the pain has decreased. My whole body feels stronger and more powerful and I feel fitter than ever. In just a month!

My plan is to get my knee strong so i can make a return kick boxing. If I achieve this goal, I am defiantly going to do CrossFit as part of my regular training as I know it will make me a much better fighter. I enjoy training at Mikes gym, it has a real community feel about it. No people sitting around on cycles watching me. Just me and my group going hard!

Cant wait for our next session tomorrow!"
